Relevant Field Applications of FRP Composites in Concrete Structures

This paper reports on nine relevant applications of FRP composites in concrete structures in the United States. Strengthening of concrete members with externally bonded FRP laminates or near surface mounted (NSM) bars has received remarkable attention. FRP materials have been used in small projects and some multi-million dollar projects for strengthening parking garages, multi-purpose convention centers, office buildings and silos. These paper reports on shear and flexural upgrades for five applications in bridges and buildings. The drivers for this technology are several, but perhaps the most relevant one is the ease of installation. FRP bars have been used as the internal reinforcement in concrete members to replace conventional steel rebars primarily to provide a permanent solution to reinforcement corrosion problems. Four applications are reported here in bridges and a marine structure. Awareness of use and availability of design and construction guidelines will rapidly increase the degree of confidence in FRP technology and allow for its widespread exploitation.
